Project Name: Repair and Upgrade of Bonriki International Airport (Kiribati)
Project Description: The World Bank approved the Pacific Aviation Investment Program (PAIP) in December 2011 aiming to improve operational safety and oversight of international air transport infrastructure. The Kiribati Aviation Investment Project (KAIP) is part of this regional program and comprises four components: (A) international airport infrastructure investments, (B) sector reform and training, (C) strengthening airport operations and management capacity, and (D) project support. Aligning with the framework of the KAIP, the TaiwanICDF and the Government of Kiribati (GoK) entered into a loan agreement to finance the Repair and Upgrade of Bonriki International Airport Project (Project) under the request of the GoK. As a sub-project of component (A) of the KAIP, the Project includes resurfacing of the runway system (the main runway, taxiway, apron areas) and landside car park at the Bonriki International Airport.

Project Objectives: The objective of the project was to raise and upgrade the safety and services standards of Bonriki International Airport, in order to meet the requirements for operations of the B737-700 aircraft.
Executing Agency: Executing Agency (EA): Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MFED) of the Republic of Kiribati.
Implementing Agency (IA): Ministry of Communication, Transport and Tourism Development (MCTTD)of the Republic of Kiribati.
Implementation Arrangement: The project was implemented by the Ministry of Communication, Transport and Tourism Development (MCTTD) and executed by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, assisted by the Technical and Fiduciary Services Unit, the Kiribati Project Support Team (both established under the KAIP), and the Kiribati Fiduciary Services Unit (established jointly by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank).
