Taiwan Technical Mission in Kiribati Holds Feed Production Workshop

Mission: Taiwan Technical Mission in the Republic of Kiribati

More than 60 people, mostly from Bikenibeu, attended a Feed Production Workshop at Ambo Aquaculture Station on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, where they gained a comprehensive, hands-on understanding of the processes involved in producing animal feeds.

The workshop’s principal lecturer was Mr. Robert Chang, who leads the Taiwan Technical Mission’s Aquaculture Project. Mr. Chang said that the main goal of the course was to show participants how local resources such as fish meat, copra and seaweed can be converted into high-value feed for livestock and farmed fish, which would help local families to improve their livelihoods and increase property values.

Senior Fisheries Officer Karibanang Tamuera said that although most families in Kiribati had often wanted to use locally sourced raw materials to produce feed for their livestock, knowing “where to begin” had always been a problem. A workshop to promote awareness of feed was therefore a worthy and meaningful event, he said, especially when it focused on processes that exploited local materials.

Ms. Gloria, principal at Bikenibeu & Nawerewere Private School, said that the event had proven to be a successful experience for participants. She also thought that the workshop would help many families to solve problems caused by a lack of quality livestock feeds, adding that participants had been especially pleased to receive a special gift of organic liquid fertilizer to take home at the end of the course.
