Taiwan Technical Mission Revives Fortunes of Panama's National Flower, Donates Seedlings to Local Colleges

Source: La Prensa, Panama

Mission: Taiwan Technical Mission in the Republic of Panama

Following a three-year project at the cutting edge of laboratory-based plant tissue culture, technicians at the Taiwan Technical Mission in Panama have helped to revive the fortunes of Panama's national flower, Peristeria elata, a species of orchid now highly endangered in its natural habitat.

Recent reports from local newspaper La Prensa describe how the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the mission now plan to donate seedlings to 84 local educational institutions in a move that will safeguard future cultivation of the rare orchid and allow a younger generation of Panamanians to see their national flower in bloom. The handover of the first batch of seedlings was marked during a ceremony at Real College in Panama City on February 16.

Orchids cultivated with Taiwanese assistance will be earmarked for ecological conservation and education and not used for commercial purposes. Modeling their latest work on a past project to cultivate Phalaenopsis orchids, Taiwanese technicians successfully cultivated 3,000 Peristeria elata in 2010 and plan to propagate up to 20,000 plants in 2011.
