Mission: Taiwan Technical Mission in the Republic of Guatemala

The Fifth Annual Furniture Fair opened in San Juan Sacatepéquez, Guatemala, on November 12, 2010, in a ceremony presided over by Deputy Director of Guatemala's Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprise Administration, Juan Carlos Velaquez, and the Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), H.E. Adolfo Sun.

Taiwan has actively supported furniture makers and similar small businesses in San Juan Sacatepéquez for more than five years. Assistance from Taiwan has included comprehensive training for manufacturers in Auto-Cad, a computer program that allows users to perform three-dimensional design work, with Taiwanese experts also providing technical assistance, business consultancy services and other forms of design training. Marketing, sales and promotion services have been offered as a complement to these measures.

During the implementation of the program, the Taiwan Investment and Trade Service Mission has worked jointly with the Association of Furniture Makers in San Juan Sacatepéquez, which has benefited significantly from such cooperation. With Taiwanese assistance, every member of the association has been able to participate in national and local trade shows, receiving praise from visitors for the quality and beauty of their handiwork.

Bamboo furniture makers who have received separate assistance from the Taiwan Technical Mission were also in attendance at this year's fair. These groups of artisans had all received training at the Bamboo Training Center in Cuyuta, Escuintla, the operation of which is just one of the projects being implemented by the Taiwan Technical Mission in Guatemala.
