Minister Audrey Tang and Dr. Mark Orrs from Colombia University share technology innovation in TaiwanICDF workshop

TaiwanICDF held its first ever Workshop on the Use of Big Data in Official Statistics from May 2 to 15. Digital Minister Audrey Tang and Dr. Mark Orrs from Colombia University were invited to host a forum on May 9 with 26 attendees from 21 nations to deliberate on GIS, big data and open government-related matters. Through live stream, the college students were able to interact with speakers and participants and engage in the latest digital technologies simultaneously.

Big data collection methods and analytics have evolved at a fast pace in recent years and applications in various aspects in Taiwan have developed rapidly. With all the data that has been collected, the Taiwan government is able to conduct national groundwork and implement policies; especially in the past few years, support from Taiwan has facilitated the use of GIS in Guatemala, Honduras, St. Kitts and Nevis and Belize.

In addition to the use of big data in official statistics for reaching social innovation and cohesion, the event also emphasized data implementation in the SDGs, including Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) in response to the United Nations High Level Political Forum and acceleration of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through data analytics.
