Project Name: Improvement of Solid Waste Management for Host Communities and Syrian Refugees in Azraq Town Project(Jordan)
Project Description: Since the civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, Jordan has housed more than 650,000 Syrian refugees. The expanding population of refugees in Jordan has increased the amount of solid waste generated and exacerbated the problem of their disposal in Azraq Town, one of the important water sources in Jordan. This project aims to assist Azraq Town in improving solid waste management and the basic living conditions of the vulnerable locals and Syrian refugees.
Overall, this project will:
1.Characterize waste and determining its value chains;
2.Strengthen of cooperatives with a view to achieving composting operations and supporting the Town Council in the collection;
3.Strengthen the Town Council and other stakeholders on the subject of waste management on technical and practical levels;
4.Establish a compost unit and service for collection and customized sorting;
5.Disseminate information concerning waste management and the related risks..

Project Objectives: To improve solid waste management for Host Communities and Syrian Refugees in Azraq region
Executing Agency: Action Against Hunger Jordan
Implementation Arrangement: The TaiwanICDF dispatches a volunteer per year during the two-year period to assist in the implementation of the project; ACF Jordan implements the proposed activities and liaises with local government offices and stakeholders.

Current Progress: To the end of February 2019, the following activities have been completed:
1. Completed one compost unit;
2. Worked with selected cooperatives to hire Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanian locals as compost unit workers and community mobilisers for awareness-raising sessions on waste management;
3. Conducted two technical compost trainings for Azraq Municipality, local cooperatives, and compost workers;
4. Conducted 35 community awareness-raising sessions on waste management and reached 272 people;
5. Conducted one public event on waste management for local associations and cooperative members.
