Cooperation between Industry and Training Institution Begins: Taiwan Technical Mission in Eswatini Inspires New Opportunity for Technical and Vocational Education and Training

To assist the Kingdom of Eswatini to cultivate a skilled workforce that meets the requirements of the labor market, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) has promoted the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Enhancement Project in Eswatini since 2015. In order to meet the demands of the industry, the TaiwanICDF continues to assist two vocational institutions, Eswatini College of Technology (ECOT) and Gwamile Vocational and Commercial Training Institute in Matsapha (VOCTIM), to improve the quality of their software and hardware. In addition, the TaiwanICDF also provides guidance on upskilling and lifelong training as well as various short-term training courses, and hopes to further enhance the competitiveness of people in the country.

In particular, ECOT recently cooperated with the local branch of a Taiwanese textile company, Tex-Ray, whereby they planned a suitable on-the-job class for the company to train 17 core employees and enhance their computer processing and data analysis capabilities. The closing ceremony of this customized training course was held on November 2 at ECOT. This training is expected to improve the company's administrative efficiency and strengthen employees’ recognition and sense of belonging in their company.

Thus far, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Enhancement Project implemented by Taiwan Technical Mission in Eswatini has improved six laboratories and workshops in the Departments of Electrical Engineering (EE), Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Automotive Repairs at ECOT and VOCTIM. In addition, a four-year syllabus for the Departments of EE and ICT at ECOT, and a two-year syllabus for the Departments of Automotive Repairs and Electrical Control at VOCTIM were drafted according to the results of an industry labor force survey carried out by the TVET project. Moreover, the latest instructional equipment was used to hold short-term training courses for lecturers and industry representatives, benefitting 130 people so far. Furthermore, 10 lecturers have been dispatched to Taiwan for six weeks of intensive training. Through these various intensive training methods, the lecturers will be able to strengthen their instructional capacity.

Taiwan Technical Mission will continue to focus on improving the teaching environment through introducing advanced equipment and boosting the capacity of the lecturers from the above-mentioned four departments. It will also focus on promoting upskilling and lifelong training and customize curriculum so as to encourage companies to send their staffs to participate in the training. Through collaboration with industry, technical education and vocational training in Eswatini could be linked with national economic development and achieve the goal of improving employees’ skills and industrial competitiveness.
