Project Name: Swine Breeding Project (Nicaragua)
Project Description: The purpose of the project is to increase income among low-income farmers by supplying high-quality pigs from the farm in Rivas, in accordance with the policies of the Zero Hunger program established by the government of Nicaragua.

Overall, the project will:

  1. Raise and renew stocks of various breeds of pig.
  2. Build capacity in pig breeding, operational strategies for farm management and financial management among technicians at Nicaraguan cooperatives.
  3. Conduct training and cooperative educational activities.
  4. Promote the use of biogas.

Swine Breeding Project (Nicaragua)

Project Objectives: The objectives of this project are:
  1. Provide assistance to develop the pig industry in accordance with the policies of the Zero Hunger program in Nicaragua, supply 12,800 high quality piglets at the Taiwan Technical Mission’s farm over four years and help to promote the improvement of breeds.
  2. Provide guidance on breeding techniques to pig farmers and raise production capacity by conducting four training sessions for 80 participants annually, or 320 participants over four years.
  3. Conduct cooperative education activities with the International Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Schools (EIAG) in Rivas, foster Nicaraguan pig breeding human resources by providing practice training and temporary work opportunities. The project is expected to train 90 students per year, or 320 students over four years.
  4. Prevent wastewater pollution at farms by using pig excrement to produce 57,600m³ of biogas over four years, and use such gas as an alternative form of energy for heating piglets’ sties.

Implementation Arrangement: Members of the Taiwan Technical Mission will provide technical assistance and assistance for capacity building.
