Technical Cooperation

Project Name: Aquaculture Project (Honduras)
Project Description: This project will conduct fry production and provide technical assistance on fish farming techniques in Carao, Omonita and Olancho regions and Yoro province. The project also aims to meet the dietary needs of children in remote and rural areas by providing high-quality sources of protein.

Overall, the project will:

  1. Breed various species of fish and develop models for the conservation and selection of fish species.
  2. Breed tilapia fry; organize aquaculture cooperatives among, and provide guidance to, local fishermen.
  3. Develop and diversify the range of produce output by the Honduran aquaculture sector, including pearl grouper fry, freshwater shrimp fry and freshwater lobster fry; and perform marketing trials for such produce.
  4. Oversee the breeding of various species of fish and provide aquaculture consultancy services in Omonita, in cooperation with Food For The Poor (FFP) and World Vision.

Project Objectives: The objectives of this project are:
  1. Phase over five tilapia fry breeding stations in the north, central and east regions of Honduras; provide 6.8 million fish fry in a breeding area of 100 hectares for an annual output of US$5 million.
  2. Assist Honduran authorities to develop the aquaculture industry, increase job opportunities and provide a source of high-quality animal protein in rural areas.
  3. Assist the promotion of direct sales of fresh fish at approximately 60,000 ponds.
  4. Expand project benefits through the integration of international assistance resources; provide capacity building and consultancy services to cooperating organizations.
