TaiwanICDF and Indonesia partner to launch new High Quality Rice Seed Development Project in South Sulawesi

TaiwanICDF and Indonesia partner to launch new High Quality Rice Seed Development Project in South Sulawesi

Rice is the main food crop in Indonesia, but domestic production has been insufficient to meet the increasing needs of the country’s growing population. In South Sulawesi, one of the nation’s important rice producing regions, the use of uncertified seeds further limits the province's capacity to expand rice production. In order to adress this situation, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia and Hasanuddin University cooperated to initiate the High Quality Rice Seed Development Project in South Sulawesi on September 6, 2017, with the aim to increase local rice production.

The main objective of the three-year project is to improve the production of qualified rice seed through the guidance of Taiwanese experts and the introduction of Taiwan's experience in rice field management. Further, this project will assist Hasanuddin University in becoming a technology center that produces qualified rice seed.

In its Strategic Plan for 2015-2019, the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture has prioritized the development of seven commodities: rice, corn, soybean, chili, onion, sugar, and meat. However, the country faces a number of challenges to enhancing production, including lack of capacity of farmers, weak certified seed industry, and lag between seed supply and demand in each planting season. Therefore, the TaiwanICDF hopes to assist Indonesia to improve production of high quality rice through this project.
