Raising Farmers’ Income through Agricultural Marketing Training

Raising Farmers’ Income through Agricultural Marketing Training

To assist the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) of El Salvador to achieve its objective of improving the livelihoods of rural families, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and the El Salvadoran government implemented the four-year Farmers’ Organization Marketing Capacity Enhancement Project in 2015. In June this year, eight staff members were dispatched to study agricultural marketing practices in Taiwan. The staff included representatives of private cooperatives, Ministry of Economy (MINEC), Micro and Small Business Development Centers (CDMYPE), and MAG.

El Salvador has not yet developed efficient control and regulation of product quality and food safety, and farmers don’t know how to add value to their products. Thus, courses of the workshop were designed to address the entire agribusiness value chain, from production, grading and packaging, to marketing and sales. Contents include management of organic farms, operation of agricultural cooperatives, Rapid Bioassay for Pesticide Residues (RBPR) techniques, management of vegetable cultivation and soil fertilizers, grading and packaging machinery, post-harvest processing, analysis of marketing strategies, as well as fruit export. It is hoped that the seed staff what they have learned to benefit more farmers in El Salvador.

Through training courses, farmers’ markets, and improving the facilities of cooperatives and packaging design, this project has already assisted farmers’ organizations to boost their sales by 20 percent.
