TaiwanICDF and Taipei Veterans General Hospital Collaborate on Safeguarding St. Kitts and Nevis Chronic Kidney Disease Care

TaiwanICDF and Taipei Veterans General Hospital Collaborate on Safeguarding St. Kitts and Nevis Chronic Kidney Disease Care

The International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH) and Ministry of Health in St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) are collaborating on the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Kidney Disease. This project officially kicked off on April 1, 2017, and will draw on Taiwan’s experience in chronic disease prevention and control to strengthen the chronic kidney disease health care system in SKN.

There are 80 patients on the renal registry but only one Cuban doctor practicing as a nephrologist in SKN. Furthermore, over one-tenth of the population in the country are at high risk for chronic kidney disease; without effective preventive measures to reduce the incidence of kidney disease or end-stage renal disease, medical expenditure in this area will become a significant burden to SKN. Therefore, the TaiwanICDF partnered with TVGH, and, using Taiwan’s fruitful experience in the field of renal disease, implemented the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Kidney Disease in line with the policy of SKN Ministry of Health. The TaiwanICDF dispatched a project manager to SKN to oversee the project and monitor its progress, whereas TVGH sent consultants to ensure the effectiveness of the training of seed instructors and provide consultancy. It is hoped that these efforts will enhance the chronic disease health care system through capacity building of healthcare personnel and improvement of healthcare facilities in the country.

Throughout the years, the TaiwanICDF has proactively responded to the needs of partner countries to assist in improving their governmental health care systems. In cooperation with hospitals and medical institutions in Taiwan, the TaiwanICDF has implemented various public health and medical projects with a focus on a number of specialized fields, including: maternal and infant healthcare; the prevention of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and neglected tropical diseases; the prevention of chronic diseases; and the expansion of health information systems.
