TaiwanICDF assists Belizean nurses in acquiring professional certification

Under the cooperation between the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH), nine dialysis nurses were officially certified by the Nurses and Midwives Council of Belize this March, putting Taiwan’s expertise in public health and medicine in the spotlight once again.

In Belize, the World Organization of Renal Therapy (WORTH) was the first and only training organization recognized by the Nurses and Midwives Council of Belize. Following the efforts of the TaiwanICDF project manager, nurses who receive training held under the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Renal Failure are now also officially recognized by the Council.

These nine dialysis nurses came from Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and La Loma Luz Hospital. Two of them are seed instructors who received three months of training at FEMH in Taiwan; the remaining seven nurses were trained by the seed instructors in Belize. This type of model whereby the local people are trained by seed instructors has become the most effective example of development assistance in public health in Taiwan.

The TaiwanICDF and FEMH worked in partnership with Ministry of Health, Belize to implement the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Renal Failure with the aim to build up the chronic renal disease system through promoting health education, enhancing public health capacity, and strengthening the health information system in Belize.
