Technical Cooperation

Project Name: Milkfish Aquaculture Project (Kiribati)
Project Description: The problem of depletion of marine resources has arisen as a result of rapid population growth and overfishing of fish stocks in the Kiribati and the absence of effective management. Milkfish is viewed as an important species of fish in Kiribati. The project aims to assist Kiribati through technical cooperation by in applying expertise and experiences from Taiwanese milkfish breeding industry to help the people of Kiribati supplement fish protein sources. Specific project work components will include:

1. Breed milkfish brood stock and raise milkfish fry;

2. Counsel on fishery resource management;

3. Enhance milkfish fry raising techniques;

4. Conduct surveys of basic information on the aquaculture sector in Kiribati.

Implementation Start Date: 2017/1/1
Implementation End Date: 2021/12/31
Project Objectives:

The objectives of this project are:

1.Breed 200 broodstock and 2 million fries of milkfish.

2.Complete one manual on the management of fishery resources in natural waters (lagoon and coastal areas).

3.Build 2 sets of 5M*5M*5M cage for milkfish cage farming.

4.Hold 15 aquaculture training workshops at Ambo Aquaculture Center.

5.Complete one manual on techniques of milkfish fry propagation and one manual on the culture medium of rotifer and microalgae, and milkfish feed.

6.Conduct capacity building on the management of broodstock, breeding, feed and live food.

7.Complete five reports on Kiribati aquaculture, including the supply and demand, production and marketing of milkfish fries in Kiribati, the management of milkfish broodstock breeding, milkfish fry propagation and live food and feed preparation, the cost-benefit analysis of milkfish farming, the current status of aquaculture species and their value chain in Kiribati, and the feasibility of milkfish cage culture in Tarawa, Kiribati.

Executing Agency:
  1. Taiwan Technical Mission in the Republic of Kiribati
  2. Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development (Republic of Kiribati)
Current Progress: To the end of March 2019, the following activities have been completed:
1. Cultivated 200 milkfish as broodstock.
2. Delivered 1,316,000 milkfish juveniles.
3. Produced 10,240 liters of rotifer medium.
4. Produced 44 tons of milkfish feed.
5. Held six (6) workshops to train more than 206 participants on fish culture.
6. Transferred the know-how of the milkfish broodstock management, larviculture and live feed production to two cooperate officers.
7. Completed the following 12 reports: “Technical Promotion Handbook of Milkfish Propagation and Larviculture”, “Technical Extension Handbook of Aquaculture”, “Handbook of Fisheries Resources Management in the Natural Waters (Lagoon and Coastal)”, “Evaluation report of the feasibility of milkfish cage culture in Tarawa Island, Kiribati”, “Reports on the supply and demand, production and marketing situation of milkfish fry in Kiribati in 2017 & 2018”, “Reports on the cost-benefit analysis of breeding milkfish in 2017 & 2018”, “Reports on the broodstock management, larviculture and the analysis of live foods cultivation and feed preparation in 2017 & 2018”, and “Reports on the status of species under cultivation and its’ industrial value chain in Kiribati in 2017 & 2018”.
