TaiwanICDF assists Nicaragua in Developing Local Plantain Industry

The International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) together with Nicaraguan Institute of Agricultural Technology (Instituto Nicaragüense de Tecnología Agropecuaria, INTA), Ministry of Family, Communal, Cooperative and Associative Economy (Ministerio de Economía Familiar, Cooperativa, Comunitaria y Asociativa, MEFCCA) and National Agrarian University (Universidad Nacional Agraria, UNA) are promoting the five-year technical cooperation Plantain Development Project in Nicaragua. The project, launched in August this year, opens a new chapter on bilateral cooperation between Taiwan and Nicaragua.

The project signing ceremony was held at INTA and the agreement was signed by Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Rolando Jer-Ming Chuang, Deputy Foreign Minister Arlette Marenco, Minister of MEFCCA Maria Auxiliadora Chiong, Commission Director of INTA Maria José and the rector of UNA Mr. Telémaco Talavera, in the presence of the officers from INTA and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Nicaragua).

Plantain is a major staple food in Nicaragua and processed plantain products such as plantain chips are wildly popular in the country. The project aims to assist Nicaragua to establish a national tissue culture center and tissue culture plantlet production, supply and marketing systems, through distribution of plantlets, technical assistance in cultivation and consultations for farmer groups. By improving capacity in plantain cultivation, Nicaragua will be able to fill the demand-supply gap in the local industry, and raise plantain production quality and yield, and increase farmers’ incomes.
