Helping Indonesia Raise Quality and Yield of Agricultural Products with Smart Greenhouse

Helping Indonesia Raise Quality and Yield of Agricultural Products with Smart Greenhouse

An opening ceremony for the completion of a smart greenhouse, which is part of the project Strengthening Incubator Agribusiness with Human Resources Development in Bandung jointly implemented by the International and Cooperation Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia to enhance the quality of local vegetables and fruits, was held in August in Indonesia. Hundreds of participants from government, industry and academia were in attendance, including Ms. Phoebe Yeh, Deputy Representative of Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia, Dr. Ade Chandra, Deputy Director for Bilateral Division, Dr. Bandel Hartopo, Director of National Agricultural Training Center in Lembang, and Dr. Widi Hardjono, Director of Bureau for Agricultural Training

West Java is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables, accounting for approximately 15 percent of the national production. Although farmers in this region reap high yields from growing vegetables and fruits, the lack of healthy seedlings and cultivation and management skills continue to pose challenges. The project’s smart greenhouse is expected to improve the current situation faced by farmers.

The greenhouse technology from Taiwan will enable local farmers to accurately control environmental conditions, thereby improving the quality of local vegetables and fruits. The project’s demonstration effects will bring about many benefits to related industries in Bandung and Taiwan, such as higher quality produce and an increase in export opportunities for Taiwan’s greenhouse industry. Combining technology and agriculture, this project will not only improve the quality and quantity of vegetables and fruits in Indonesia, but will also enhance the visibility of Taiwan’s greenhouse industry and create further possibilities technical agricultural cooperation between Indonesia and Taiwan.
