New Pesticide Residue Inspection System to Improve Health of Dominican Republic Citizens

New Pesticide Residue Inspection System to Improve Health of Dominican Republic Citizens

To assist the Dominican Republic in establishing a reliable pesticide residue inspection system, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) cooperated with the local government to implement the Health Management of Greenhouse Vegetables and Product Safety Inspection Project in the Dominican Republic. As part of the project, the Dominican Republic purchased pesticide residue biochemical testing equipment from Taiwan, which was launched on September 2. Taiwan Ambassador to the Dominican Republic Valentino Ji Zen Tang and Minister of Agriculture Angel Estévez were present for the official launch of the equipment.

Speaking on behalf of Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina at the launching ceremony, which was held at the Dominican Institute of Agriculture and Forestry Research (Instituto Dominicano de Investigaciones Agropecuarias y Forestales, IDIAF), Minister Estévez thanked Taiwan for providing agricultural technical assistance and stated that the contribution will benefit vegetable exports. As well, he expressed the Dominican Republic’s interest in purchasing equipment from Taiwan in the future so that its application can be extended to all levels of agriculture to ensure food safety.

The pesticide residue inspection system is a component of the Health Management of Greenhouse Vegetables and Product Safety Inspection Project in the Dominican Republic, initiated in 2015. A station for biochemical testing of pesticide residues was established in the IDIAF, to provide testing services to the capital Santo Domingo and four neighboring areas. During the project’s implementation, the TaiwanICDF dispatched short-term Taiwanese experts to the Dominican Republic to conduct diagnoses of pests and diseases of greenhouse vegetables, provide strategies on control and prevention and the safe use of pesticides, and to build the capacity of Dominican personnel.
