Horticultural Expert Dispatched to Improve Food Security in Nepal

Horticultural Expert Dispatched to Improve Food Security in Nepal

International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) has dispatched a short-term horticulture expert to assist in carrying out Gorkha Food Security and Livelihoods Support Program (Nepal), which aims to help the most vulnerable earthquake-affected households improve their farming and production capacity and food security in the Gorkha district.

In order to promote the visibility of Taiwan in Nepal as a humanitarian aid provider and strengthen the bilateral interaction with CARE Nepal, the TaiwanICDF has invited Mr. Chen Chih-Fan, who was a horticulture technician in São Tomé and Príncipe and Honduras technical missions, to support the implementation of the project for two months from July 1, 2016. Mr. Chen’s specialty is organic agriculture, including vegetable and fertilizer production. Using local materials in the Gorkha district, Mr. Chen makes organic fertilizers such as a sunflower oil and tobacco plant spray to prevent tomato diseases and insect pests. As well, he teaches local farmers to install simple drip irrigation systems, providing them with more effective and environmentally friendly ways of cultivation.

The technical guidance provided by Mr. Chen highlights Taiwan’s expertise in agriculture specialty and international aid efforts, further enhancing the country’s exposure in the international community.
