TaiwanICDF and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital delegation visits Belize to establish a basic prevention and control system for chronic renal failure

TaiwanICDF and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital delegation visits Belize to establish a basic prevention and control system for chronic renal failure

Jointly dispatched by the TaiwanICDF and Far Eastern memorial Hospital (FEMH), a delegation team headed for Belize on May 23, 2016, on a supervision mission for the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Renal Failure in Belize.

The six-member team, led by Ms. Wang Hung-Tzu, Director of Humanitarian Assistance Department of TaiwanICDF and Dr. Lin Fang-Yue, President of FEMH, includes nephrologists and information engineers. During the mission, FEMH will engage in discussion on kidney disease cases with Belizean physicians and provide clinical instructions on ultrasound examinations, as well as donate 100 artificial kidneys to the Ministry of Health of Belize.

In addition, Ms. Wang and Dr. Lin will be exclusively interviewed in the program Open Your Eyes on Channel Five, a local television channel, and will discuss the project’s progress with stakeholders.

According to national statistics, the prevalence rate of hypertension and diabetes among adults in Belize is over 30 percent, both of which are leading risk factors of chronic renal failure. Thus, through the cooperation between the TaiwanICDF and FEMH, the project was launched in early 2016 to assist in the establishment of a basic prevention and control system for chronic renal failure and reduce the burden of chronic diseases in Belize.
