Central America

Department: Technical Cooperation
Project Name: Bamboo Industries Project(Guatemala)
Project Description: To date the development of the bamboo industry in Guatemala has seen the planting of bamboo and the processing of basic products (furniture, weaving, and bamboo flooring and walling). Bamboo afforestation has reached 12,000 hectares, including 7,000 hectares of commercial-grade bamboo species (Dendrocalamus, Guadua angustifolia kunth), although the area used for commercial production only covers 700 hectares.

At present Guatemala’s bamboo resources are poorly utilized; the country lacks anti-corrosion treatments and technologies, and there are few technicians and operations managers within the industry. This has meant that products are still handmade, so yields are low are products are expensive, and the industry is ultimately uncompetitive.

To assist the Guatemalan government in improving the competitiveness of its bamboo industry, this project will oversee the establishment of a commercial afforestation field and a processing factory, thereby enhancing the country’s bamboo production, processing and management capacity.
