Project Name: Healthy Avocado Seedling Production Project in Honduras
Project Description: The avocado is a fruit native to Latin America, has a high nutritional value and is one of the main fruits of daily consumption. The Honduran avocado market depends heavily on imports, which is why the price of avocado is too high and the average consumption per year is only 1 kg per person. Comparing this figure with the average of 7 kg of other Central American countries, we can see that the avocado is still of great potential for market in the Republic of Honduras. Therefore, the Government of the Republic of Honduras puts the development of the avocado industry as one of the priorities of the national agricultural development. It also has the prospect of increasing production of healthy seedlings of avocado and expanding the area of the crop, so that the Republic of Honduras will be able to increase the supply of domestically produced avocado and meet the demands of the domestic market. Overall, the project will: 1. Improve the facilities for the avocado seedling reproduction; 2. Build the seed nurseries of the Hass avocado; 3. Strengthen the capacities of technical staff; 4. Produce an annual average of 35,000 seedlings of the Haas avocado; and 5. Strengthen the management capabilities for the avocado seedling reproduction station.
