TaiwanICDF to Report Successful Aid for Trade Case Studies at WTO

The Fifth Global Review of Aid for Trade will take place at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva from June 30 to July 2. Taking “reducing trade costs for inclusive, sustainable growth” as its theme, the event will explore how the power of development aid can be utilized to achieve change.

The TaiwanICDF will be represented at the review by Jonathan Liu, the deputy director of the organization’s Technical Cooperation Department, who will also share case studies of three successful aid for trade-related TaiwanICDF projects in Latin America, Africa and the South Pacific at a side event hosted by Taiwan’s permanent mission to the WTO.

The 20th anniversary year of the establishment of the WTO has seen Taiwan’s permanent mission to the WTO make a special bid to host this side event, which will focus on the TaiwanICDF’s ICT Technical Cooperation Project in Belize, Tropical Vegetable and Fruit Cultivation and Extension Project in Fiji, and Sweet Potato Production and Marketing Project in Swaziland, which have respectively facilitated trade by strengthening the ease of customs clearance, improved production techniques and expanded export markets, and generated multiple streams of income in rural communities by using agro-processing and marketing as a means of promoting industrial development. This will introduce various WTO representatives, aid for trade officials and members of the media to relations between Taiwan and its partner countries, share Taiwan’s experience of reducing trading costs through technical assistance, and highlight the effectiveness of the country’s foreign aid work.

The side event, jointly organized by Taiwan’s permanent mission to the WTO and the Geneva branch of World Vision under the full title of “Understanding Effective Development Partnerships—Cooperative Experiences with Developing Countries/LDCs,” will take place from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on July 1.

Following opening remarks from Amb. Lai Shih-yuan, Permanent Representative of the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu to the WTO, and the keynote presentation by Deputy Director Liu, the side event will also hear comments from a number of panelists, including Ms. Carmen Gisela Vergara, the Secretary General of SIECA (Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration), Amb. Ms. Njabuliso Busisiwe Gwebu, the ambassador of Swaziland to the WTO, and Ms. Beris Gwynne, World Vision’s representative to the WTO, as part of a discussion to be moderated by Amb. Mr. Dacio Castillo, the ambassador of Honduras to the WTO.
