Project Name: Solomon Islands: Addressing Health and Hygiene needs of those affected by the Solomon Islands Flooding in Weathercoast, Guadalcanal
Project Description: A tropical depression hit the Solomon Islands in April 2014 and resulted in heavy rain and severe flash flooding, which damaged water supply systems, livestock and poultry pens and corrals, and food sources for an affected population estimated at 52,000. These three factors have adversely affected the health status of those in Weathercoast, Guadalcanal and resulted in a dramatic increase in cases of diarrhea and acute respiratory tract infection.

To improve the post-disaster conditions, the TaiwanICDF has cooperated with World Vision Taiwan to address the health and hygiene needs of those affected by the flooding by building the capacity of local health workers, by raising awareness among community members on how to prevent disease through enhanced knowledge, by restoring and improving water supply systems, and by addressing the environmental conditions arising from the damage to pens and corrals used to raise animals.

Overall, this project:
1. Improved the capacity of 12 affected communities in responding to their health and hygiene needs.
2. Installed adequate water supply systems in five communities for use in drinking, washing and bathing.
3. Provided materials to 160 households to rebuild pens and corrals (using both community and external resources).
