TaiwanICDF Hosts 2014 Workshop on the Prevention and Control of HLB in Citrus

TaiwanICDF Hosts 2014 Workshop on the Prevention and Control of HLB in Citrus

Since 2008, a number of Taiwan’s partner countries in Central America and the Caribbean have been under attack from Huanglongbing (HLB), a disease which has hit the citrus industries in places including the Dominican Republic, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua. In view of this, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs commissioned the TaiwanICDF to work with the International Regional Organisation for Plant and Animal Health (OIRSA) in implementing a Strengthening the Control of Huanglongbing (HLB) and the Implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Citrus Project. The scope of implementation of the initiative, which got under way in 2012, covers the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

To ensure the successful transfer of disease protection techniques, the TaiwanICDF has planned a series of training curricula designed to support the establishment of systems and concepts associated with the prevention and treatment of HLB. As of 2013 these efforts are being implemented in a phased approach over three consecutive years, assisting partners to train technicians in HLB control and IPM, and nurture localized technical talent. The first round of training for 26 people was successfully completed in May 2013.

In a continuation of last year’s successful experience, a second round of training for 25 participants is now due to run from October 23 to November 5. The primary objective is to promote HLB control techniques and IPM-related concepts, sharing Taiwan’s rich experience of neutralizing plant diseases, and enhancing the phytosanitary capacity of partner country technicians in a progressive manner, thereby safeguarding quality and yield within their respective local citrus industries.
